ABSTRACT:

Metabolic disorders like insulin resistance, obesity and cardiovascular diseases are becoming more and more common lately due to advent of Western diet, lack of physical activity and stressful lifestyle. The effect of gut microbiota on host metabolism is complex. Gut has a profound role in the extraction of nutrition from food, intestinal permeability, generation of SCFA and modulation of immune system via TLRs and NLRs. All these factors together contribute to insulin resistance. Extensive studies in germ free mice have validated that gut bacteria cause obesity and insulin resistance. The exact signalling pathways and mechanisms remain unexplored due to the complexity of the flora and lack of adequate expertise.
